In this blog I want to discuss the science of climate change.
On one hand, the "Anthropocene" written by Paul J. Crutzen and Eugene F.Stoeermer who are the Dutch Nobel Laureate chemist states that mankind plays a major role in geology and ecology.  They wrote this article for the newletter of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme in which they suggested that the Holocene--the geological epoch that marked the 10,000 years of human civilization-- had come to an end. The increasing number of mankind's population and mankind's brainpower and technological talents of pre-capita exploitation of Earth's resources is affecting the world greatly.  The depletion of a large amount of fossil fuels  makes "greenhouse" gas increase apparently in the atmosphere. The main "greenhouse" gas is carbon dioxide. According to a study by Berger and Loutre, the artificial emissions of carbon dioxide will become  the main factor of climate change over the next 50,000 years (p71). All in all, mankind's activity have great influence on climate change.
On the other hand, the Scientific Consensus on Climate Change written by Namoi Oreskes who has taught at Harvard, Damouth, and NYU states that the scientific consensus on climate change is unclear. He wrote this article because he felt interested in investigating the analysis which appeared in Science in December 2004. The report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC)has express the scientific consensus clearly. In it's opinion, climate change is being affected by mankind's activities. Though most of the reports and statements support this opinion, some people still feel confuse or disagree with scientific consensus because there are many specific factors on climate change that we haven't known well yet. Scientists are supposed to do further research to make it  clear.
As far as I am concerned,  human being's activity is the major factor that affect climate change. According to the National Academy of Sciences report, Climate Change Science, greenhouse gases are accumulateing in earth's atmosphere as a result of human activities, causing surface air temperatures and subsurface ocean temperatures to rise (p76). In our life, people  burn oil or coal frequently. That will release a large amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It leads to the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide accumulate in the atmosphere. Therefore, mankind's activities have deeply influence on climate change.

In this blog, I want to talk about my first post of blog.  From what we discuss in class, I think I have summarize the  main idea of the article New York Is Lagging as Seas and Risks Rise, Critics Warn , state my opinion, summarize the main idea of one of the comment and do my reaction. Although  I have done what the assignment requires, I find there are still some weakness in my summary. I only summarize a few main point of the article. In our discussion, I have learned a little bit skill about how to write a good summary.

New York Is Lagging as Seas and Risks Rise, Critics Warn

In this blog I am responding to an assignment in my ENG 101 composition class on climate change. The assignment asked me to summary the main idea of the article New York Is Lagging as Seas and Risks Rise, Critics Warn  and  the best idea from one of the first three "Reader's Picks" comments to the article.

According to the article, NewYork is facing the interwoven threats because of rising seas and storm flooding. Since oceans become warmed and is expanding, the rising rate of sea level is accelerating and flood happens more frequently. The flooding threat is growing gradually. The flood paralyzes the subway system, cripples the financial district and even drives resident from home. Generally, federal assistance is vital to change the situation. However, city officials do not take effective measures to solve the problem. They prefer to improve the ability of city to recover from  flooding rather than to prevent  flood from threating city. They are only concerned about the economic development but ignore the importance of environment. But the flooding makes NewYork city's economy suffer huge loss. Therefore, officials should incorporate flood-protection measures, as building some barriers, into projects to amoring the city. They should carry out some measures to stop the flood from ocurring in order to resolve the problem fundamentally.

From a reader Jim Gordon's comment, I know that the important measure is to quickly transit to clean and renew energy. Building sea gates will pollute the environment, cause disaster and accelarate the climate change. I agree with him. The original reason of climate change is the environmental pollution, like carbon dioxide pollution, which cause the sea level rising and the flooding. However, building barriers is the protection measure for flooding rather than  the solution for environmental pollution. In other words, building barriers can not make difference to  the climate change. The increasing essimision of  Carbon dioxide  accelarates the environmental pollution. The best way to reduce the pollution is to recycle resource and renew energy so that we can slow down the pace of climate change.
